Empr. à l'ital. manganese, att. au sens 1 dep. 1301-1303 (Statuto della gabella di Siena ds Batt.), d'orig. inc.; Bl.-W.^1-5, EWFS², Cor. et Cor.-Pasc. y voient une altération du lat. médiév. magnesia (magnésie*) alors que DEI et Batt. proposent un gr. byz. μ α γ ν η ́ σ ι ο ν, mais ces formes ne conviennent pas du point de vue phonét.
